Types of expression
Allan contends that one can group music videos according to types of expression—separate from genres based on content. That is, genres such a rock, pop, rap, country and R&B are the most common way of grouping music videos, but cutting across those genres are certain expressive forms. Allan lists four of them:
- Performance - Group 1
- U2, in the name of Love
- Narrative - Group 2
- Taylor Swift
- Nonnarrative - Group 3
- Shakira, "Hips Don't Lie"
- Graphic - Group 4
- Ke$ha, "your love"
Each group should find a video that exemplifies one "type of expression" and be prepared to explain how it does so. The video must be available online. No R-rated videos, please.
